ORGANIC INDUSTRY

Based on the IFOAM ORGANICS report: “The World of Organic Agriculture Statistics and Emerging Trends 2023” presented during Biofach 2023.
On the global front, the Organic market shows overall growth, but at a slower pace. This is due to the reduction in incomes and the increase in the prices of many consumer goods which have led some consumers to reduce spending on organic products.
Organic farming is applied in 191 countries and more than 76 million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by at least 3.7 million farmers. [1] In addition, global sales of organic food and beverages reached almost 125 billion euros in 2021: this is what emerges from the report “[2]
Concerning production, however, in 2021 3.7 million organic producers were registered, according to the report, with an increase of 4.9% compared to 2020. India remains the country with the largest number of organic producers (1.6 million).[3]
The US continues to lead with €48.6 billion, followed by Germany (€15.9 billion) and France (€12.7 billion). [4] Growing steadily, we see Switzerland with a consumption of (425 euros per capita on average) and Denmark, with 13% of its total food market.[5]
The largest organic agricultural area (35.7 million hectares) goes to Australia, followed by Argentina (4.1 million hectares) and France (2.8 million hectares). [6] In addition, the organic agricultural area has increased in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. While Europe is in second place by extent (17.8 million hectares), followed by Latin America (9.9 million hectares).[7]
An encouraging fact for our operators is that Italy is at the top of the ranking as regards the number of organic producers, with over 75 thousand operators out of the 440,000 active ones in Europe.
In short, we may identify an interesting set of numbers, even if the global crisis and the war affect consumption and exports linked to them, it could certainly have been worse and the efforts given by active policies in the EU and globally continue to aim at a future where Organic Food remains a prerogative for many institutions and future actions to be supported, promoted and maintained throughout the globe.
